im so struggling with this each and every year. last year i told everyone i wasnt doing gifts. i think i felt guiltier than the stress i would have felt shopping. how messed up and consumer-culture fueled is that???????

Good post! I’m going to try to make all my Christmas gifts this year. I do buy gifts for people because I want to and usually it is something I picked up much earlier in the year (I LOATHE “Christmas shopping.”) I have a feeling I’m going to be baking a lot of cookies this year. :-)

Homemade also lets you avoid the malls, the driving, the stress…. well, there’s still the stress of making things on a deadline, but handcrafting can be way more fun than shopping. And for those who do have little cthulhus around the house, it’s a good way to get them involved in the giving spirit (assuming you like and want to keep the giving spirit).

I agree that the holiday is overcommercialized, but there are definitely ways to enjoy the festive sentiments without buying into (pun intended) the consumerist regimes.

Hmm. Regifting swaps may be a useful idea for more than once a year…. interested?
