I am a WOW member; I went in more or less already decided to join so long as the facilities were more or less decent because it is so close to my home. Since the facilities were ok for me I did join. I guess I did not run into "the hard sell" because I decided to sign up fairly quickly.

My son went over to the same facility a couple of days ago based on their 5 day pass ad. He wanted to actually use the pass to try out the facility. What a disaster. They put him through the hard sell and now he is sure to never ever go into a WOW ever again. He was never given a chance to use the pass.

I've belonged to just about every gym in town at one point or another! I can't tell you how many thousands of dollars I could have used to pay off debt; instead I padded the pockets of the owners. *Sighs* We've all done it, I think! And your post brings up a point I want to remember to blog about; why I decided a few months ago not to join a gym. If I can't bring myself to work out at home... why pay someone else for space I won't use? Great post. If I'm motivated I'll find a way to work out regardless of my location.

Heh, I'm not very sporty either. The last time I played in organized athletics I was in middle school. Took the required gym classes in high school, but wasn't on any teams. Met the athletic requirements in college too, which is where I learned squash and fencing, but again, nothing more. I'm not super extroverted either, honestly. That's why I prefer sports that only require a few people (squash, golf, etc.), so I can draft a few friends, and I don't need 10-16 people to play. At the weekly squash games, we usually have 2-4 people, occasionally a few more, but never more than 6.

To be honest, I've never been very sporty. In high school I participated in cross country very very briefly. I also played soccer even more briefly.

As I'm somewhat introverted (not that it shows here) I think I prefer the more solitary athletic pastimes.

Also look into free/low cost gym options. As an alumni still leaving near my alma mater, I have gym access to a facility that, while more sports oriented than workout oriented, does offer a fair set of facilities. YMCAs, YWCAs, and Community Centers still exist, and can usually provide complete facilities at low rates.

And my favorite inexpensive exercise routine? group sports. Get a handful of friends together on a regular basis, and play some sort of physically active game. Soccer, Frisbee, Tennis, whatever so long as it gets you out and moving. It may be harder to arrange than just jogging around the block, but it leverages hive mentality in your favor. If everyone is doing it, it's easier to get yourself to do it, and more of a letdown when you don't (peer pressure!). Plus, you can feel good knowing that you're helping other people get exercise too.
