I was graced with similar circumstances. At the time I was applying to schools, my father was driving passenger buses for the casino and delivery trucks for a printer. My mother had already been out on long term medical leave for two years due to surgical complications after removing a tumor from her spinal column. I was fortunate to be accepted to Brandeis. At the time, tuition, room, board, and other expenses came in to the 36k-40k range (one of the top ten most expensive schools in the country at the time I found out), all said and done. My first year I was given half of my tuition as need-based aid. I was an out of student, unfortunately, so did not qualify for state aid. I still have about 22k of federal and private aid to pay back, sometime before I die.
