We didn't have to get rid of very much stuff, just junk we didn't need anymore anyways. I am not suggesting this route for everyone else--but I am sharing it for anyone else who had/has to go through this route.

I just wrote a post about it, but unfortunately there is no hope in our are of selling our home, no houses have sold in our neighborhood for years, and many have been foreclosed. We are having to walk away from it, but there is an option to sign the deed over in lieu of foreclosure. I think that is the most ethical thing to do, and it saves any court costs that foreclosure would cause.

After nearly three years of trying to save our house since my husband was laid off, it is actually a huge load off and a relief to have moved into a much cheaper rental.

How did that work out for you? Did you have to get rid of a lot of stuff? Were you able to sell your house all right? That's one big concern I have about downsizing (besides the other objections I mention in my post?)

Wow, I recently downsized. We couldn't afford our mortgage anymore, so moved out and into a cheaper rental, about $700 for the three of us (my husband and a roommate) it is closer to the bus routes, though I still will likely have to drive to work, but it is really neat to realize how cheaply one can live.

That is an interesting experiment! Sometimes, seeing what is really out there reminds us to appreciate what we have. I get house envy from time to time on my daily walk. Now, I pretend to look at my house as if I didn't live there to remind myself that it's a pretty great place too!

[...] In that case use google maps to look for bus stops instead. Even if you are not going to move, try going through the craigslist/google maps exercise anyway just to realize that it is possible. Don’t worry. There are other ways to self-actualize than [...]
